The Academy House (also known as The Bratt Mansion) was completed in 1848 to house the superintendent and officers of the Maryland Military Academy (MMA). Dormitories and classrooms were constructed on southerly lots but burned in 1855 due to careless smoking from one of the cadets. No funds were available to rebuild so the MMA went out of business. In the early 1860s, Henry and Jane Bell of Ireland, gifted the Academy House as a wedding present to their daughter, Mary Ann who married Samuel Bratt of Baltimore. They had seven children. The property remained in the Bratt family until 1965. A bright and sunny home with deeded access to the river has been sensitively restored and renovated in 2020-2022. The main level features 10 1/2-foot ceilings, refinished original heart of pine floors, large open hallway with impressive chandelier, repaired and repainted plaster throughout; a newly added kitchen with double ovens and high cabinets, under cabinet lighting, glass door cabinets, quartzite countertops; living room, dining room, an office with corner fireplace and wet bar. The upper level features a large primary bedroom suite, refinished and new hardwood floors, new washer/dryer, new bath with new cast iron slipper tub with view of Tred Avon River. An accessible widows walk provides incredible views of the river. A clerestory sunroom with brick floor connects to the garage which was newly sided with HardiePlank siding. Repairs were made to the cupola and a new garage roof was added in 2021. The house roof gutters use the LeafFilter system. Extensive landscaping, established and maintained mature trees, an abundance of hydrangeas and a 20 x 40 salt water pool add to the ½ acre private, fenced yard.
